My favorite time of the year is here, but Black history deserves to be celebrated and acknowledged everyday.
As a Black therapist, I take pride in utilizing my own lived experience and cultural competencies to aid in the healing of Black people across the diaspora. As a Black woman, I take pride in knowing that the skin I bear comes with a legacy of honor, triumph, love, and magic.

Learning Black History can encourage understanding and empowering of Black people across the African diaspora, but especially those that call America home. Black history should be celebrated and acknowledged by all walks of life.

Finding power in our blackness can allow us to not only see the love and light we possess, but also work to break and heal generational trauma.

There is power in knowledge, let's start today to embrace that.

I often like to compare emotional healing to the process of physical healing. Sometimes the recovery hurts worse than the injury.

Through those times, it is important to remember why you started to begin with. You are not alone. As we choose to heal, we also choose to face some not so pretty truths that often feel worse than the original pain.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Though a difficult topic, it is one that is needed to be discussed in order to bring awareness and understanding.

Warning signs of suicide can include:
• aggressive behaviors
•drastic changes in patterns or appearances
• abnormal reckless behavior
• increased use of substances
• withdrawal from community

But also, it could include no signs at all. That is why it is important to check in on and be understanding of our people. Breaking the stigma of mental health and the stigma of suicide can aid in this. I challenge you all to take some time this month, and beyond this month, to check in on those you love. Be ready to listen, to understand. You never know who needs to hear that they matter.
